Imphal, February 09 2024:
Highlighting the abnormal population growth in the hill areas of Manipur, MP Leisemba Sanajaoba today urged the Government of India to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with either 1951 or 1961 as the base year.
Speaking on the floor of the Rajya Sabha during zero hour, Leisemba Sanajaoba said that the unnatural population growth has been posing serious socio-economic threats and demographic challenges to the people of Manipur.
He said that the abnormal population growth rate in the hill districts is also affecting the valley districts as it leads to huge migration from the hill districts to the valley districts.

The lone Rajya Sabha Member from Manipur elucidated that the unfenced or porous Indo-Myanmar border, particularly along Manipur sector, Free Movement Regime, negligence/lapses on the part of security forces guarding the international border, continuous fighting between Myanmar military junta and rebel groups and manipulation of census figure to secure political advantages and immigration from neighbouring countries for varied reasons are the major factors responsible for the abnormal population growth in the hill areas of Manipur.
He also sought the Centre's attention to the extreme misery being endured by almost all sections of people in Manipur on account of the 10 months old violent conflict.
Leisemba Sanajaoba urged the Government of India to scrap the FMR, start construction of fence along the 1648 Kms long Indo-Myanmar border as soon as possible and set up a population commission.
He also highlighted the necessity of continuing the work of collecting biometric data of illegal immigrants.
