Imphal, February 09 2024:
The bamboos available in Manipur are the future of humankind, stated Forest and Environment minister Th Biswajit.
He made the statement while handing over 20 beds made by the residents of Manipur College relief camp under the aegis of Bamboo Development and Promotion (BADPO), MAHUD minister and Singjamei AC MLA Yumnam Khemchand on Friday.
Biswajit continued that bam boo is an economic, social and environmental future of humankind.
While Kwatha is already known for production of bamboo shoots, other products such as incense sticks including industrial purpose items could be produced and utilised without wastage.
As the soil in Manipur is highly compatible, bamboos can be grown and processed on a mass scale in all districts.
In this regard, preparations should be made on the type of saplings to be used, apart from being value-added, he explained.
Remarking that environmental degradation is due to failure of acknowledging the importance of forests, he stressed the need for preserving the naturally available products to the optimum.
He then mentioned the usage of bamboo decorations in the airport and other key locations, in view of its multi usage and long shelf life, while urging all to produce more bamboo products and help improve the economy of the state.
Regarding the prevailing conflict situation in the state, Biswajit said that for 100 per cent settlement to be possible there needs to be 100 per cent assurance of peace.
It would be difficult to make peace immediately and would take some time as it is a communal conflict.
In this, the government has not stopped its efforts to resettle all concerned, he maintained, adding that the government also feels the pain and suffering of the people.
In his speech, minister Y Khemchand urged the societies in Manipur, which has the highest number of bamboo varieties, to produce more bamboo products and contribute to the economy of the state and country.
He then said that a variety of bamboo, known for releasing most oxygen, is found in Manipur.
As such, the second Oxygen Park in the world, after the first one in Hyderabad, will be set up in Manipur, for which the MAHUD Department has already received the funds, he informed.
