Imphal, February 09 2024:
While calling for urgent measures to neutralise the threat to national security and check unnatural population growth in the hill districts of Manipur, Rajya Sabah MP Leishemba Sanajaoba raised the demand for implementation of NRC in the state with either 1951 or 1961 as the base year, in the Parliament, on Friday.
Bringing up the issue during the zero hour of the parliament session, Manipur's titutlar king Sanajaoba informed the House that the abnormally high rate of population growth in some hill districts has affected the internal security, socio-economic and demography of the state to a large extent.
Citing factors for the unnatural growth of population in the hill districts, he cited the unfenced porous border, adverse elements taking advantage of the free movement regime (FMR), which the central government suspended on Thursday, imprudence of security forces entrusted to man the borders, uncertainty/turmoil in neighbouring Myanmar, manipulation of census figure to draw political mileage and illegal immigration from neighbouring countries.
MP Sanajaoba also informed the House about the humanitarian crisis gripping Manipur for over nine months, causing serious problems and hardships to the people of the state.
