Imphal, January 27 2025:
The armed Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) observed the 110th birth anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu and the 76th Republic Day of India on Sunday at its general headquarters, Mount Ararat.
The coincidence of India's Republic Day with the birth anniversary of Ranima Gaidinliu, the freedom fighter, adds significance to the occasion, ZUF said in a statement.
It maintained that Republic Day of India commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, replacing the Government of India Act, 1935, and marking the nation's transition into a democratic republic where power lies with the people.
The day is celebrated as a triumph of democratic spirit and victory over colonial rule.
This year, the Republic Day was observed with the theme "Swarnim Bharat - Virasat our Vikas (Golden India - Heritage and Development)", highlighting India's cultural heritage, unity in diversity, and efforts to promote national integration, unity, and development.
ZUF further informed that homage and tributes were paid to freedom fighters for their sacrifices in securing India's independence, with special recognition of Ranima Gaidinliu, a great freedom fighter from the Zeliangrong community of the Naga Hills in Assam, northeast India.
Born on January 26, 1915, her life and struggle for a free nation and her vision for a Zeliangrong homeland remain a source of inspiration.
Kusumlata Nayyar, who was closely associated with her, described Ranima as a brave, modest, and virtuous leader with a magnetic personality and an uncompromising spirit against colonial rule.
Ranima and her followers declared their freedom and refusal to comply with British-imposed taxes, a testament to her revolutionary zeal, ZUF added.
ZUF commemorated the dual significance of the day, honouring the sacrifices and contributions of freedom fighters while reaffirming the democratic ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, as enshrined in the Constitution of India, the statement added.
