Imphal office commemorates 75th NSS day

Imphal, July 18 2025:
Regional Office of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, on Friday commemorated 75th year of National Sample Survey (NSS) in India at Hotel Imphal.
According to NSO RO assistant director Thongam Nilakanta Singh, the commemoration participated by statisticians, academicians, students, and government officials, featured a quiz competition aimed at spreading awareness about the NSS and its significant contributions to data-driven policy making in India.
Speaking as chief guest, Dhanamanjuri University vice chancellor Prof W Chandba-bu Singh lauded the NSS for its unwavering commitment to statistical excellence and evidence-based planning.
He emphasised the crucial role played by NSS in understanding the socio-economic realities of the country arid called upon the younger generation to take interest in statistics and data science to contribute meaningfully to the nation's development.
As the guest of honour, Economics & Statistics secretary Joseph Pauline Kamson stressed the need for greater awareness and outreach of the NSS framework among the masses, appreciated the role of NSS surveys in bridging the information gap and shaping policy frameworks, and encouraged the students to actively participate in such academic initiatives and develop an analytical mind-set rooted, in factual understanding.
In his presidential address, NSO RO Imphal deputy director general Dr Manao Singh reflected on journey of the National Sample Survey since its inception in 1950 and its evolution into one of the most respected survey mechanisms in the world.
He highlighted key achievements and milestones underscoring the commitment of NSO to integrity, transparency, and statistical rigour.
The quiz contest conducted as a part of the commemorative programme was won by Wahengbam Danial Singh and Jenia Nongthombam of Department of Economics, Manipur University (MU), as Elangbam Premkumar and Laishram Naocha Meetei MU Department of Statistics secured the second prize, and Debajit Langpoklakpam and Mainam Kareena Shah of Department of Statistics, Liberal College bagged the third prize.
The position winners as well as all the participants were presented medals and certificates.
