Imphal, July 16 2025:
A 31-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, underwent a successful brain surgery for tumour removal at Little Clinic, Nagaram.
The complex operation was performed on July 1 by consultant neurosurgeon Dr Chandrakumar and his team.
According to Khundrakpam Rajmohon, former Zilla Parishad member of Khangabok and father of the patient, his daughter had been experiencing persistent headaches, dizziness, nausea, and blurred vision over the past few weeks.
Initially suspecting an eye-related issue, the family consulted several ophthalmologists and tried prescribed medications, but the symptoms persisted.
She was later referred to Dr Chandrakumar at Little Clinic for further evaluation.
The patient was admitted to the clinic on June 30, where preliminary tests were conducted despite limitations due to her pregnancy.
Following the diagnosis of Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), a serious condition involving abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the brain, surgery was scheduled with the family's consent.
Dr Chandrakumar explained that the procedure was particularly challenging as the usual surgical position, which requires the patient to lie prone (on the stomach), was not feasible due to the pregnancy.
The operation was instead conducted with the patient lying on her side to ensure the safety of both mother and the unborn child.
"During the operation, we dis covered a tumour on the lower side of the brain that had obstructed the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathway, causing fluid build-up in the upper part of the brain.
Both the tumour and the accumulated fluid were successfully removed.
If the tumour had been left in place while only removing the fluid, it could have resulted in reverse herniation - a potentially life-threatening condition," Dr Chandrakumar explained The patient was kept under observation post-surgery and discharged in stable condition on July 14 .
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Rajmohon said, "We feared we might lose her, and she wouldn't be able to care for her other 3.5-year-old daughter.
But thanks to the timely intervention and expertise of Dr Chandrakumar and the staff of Little Clinic, everything has been resolved" .
The case highlighted the importance of timely neurological evaluation and the capability of specialised medical teams to handle high-risk surgeries, even during pregnancy.
