Imphal, May 02 2025:
A delegation of All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) called on Governor AK Bhalla on Thursday arid submitted a memorandum, urging him to address the continued threats to religious freedom in the State, particularly for the Christian community.
The memorandum highlighted the destruction of more than 450 churches and religious institutions during the ethnic violence between Meetei and Kuki-Zo communities that began on May 3, 2023 .
Of these, 253 destroyed churches belonged to the Meetei Christian minority community, according to AMCO .
The organisation expressed deep concern that even after two years, many church sites have not been restored and some are being converted into local grounds and ponds.
An atmosphere of fear and intimidation still prevails, preventing Meetei Christiahs from holding worship services freely and peacefully, AMCO said.
It then appealed to the Governor to take concrete steps to ensure the freedom of religion as guaranteed by the Constitution of India and international covenants, while urging the state government to create a conducive and peaceful environment where people of all faiths can worship without fear.
Maintaining that ensuring the rule of law and protection of religious rights at the present juncture would enhance the prestige of Manipur and India.in the international community, AMCO re-affirmed its commitment to praying for healing and justice, and restoration of peaceful co-existence in the state.
