Five dogs rescued, liquor vendor arrested

Police have rescued five dogs that were held captive for sale as meat and arrested the vendor, who has been remanded to three days in police custody, according to L Biswajeet Meitei, managing trustee of People for Animals Manipur.
In a press release, Biswajeet informed that Nambol PS personnel were conducting mobile patrolling to prevent any unwanted incidents on Monday when they came across the property of a liquor vendor in Bamdiar Ahalup Makha Leikai, adding that the police team found five dogs separately tied in gunny bags (Bora Khao) with binding wires, leaving only their heads out, and kept inside a cage.
Police immediately arrested the vendor identified as Ningthoujam Suran Singh.
The police then informed People for Animals Manipur to rescue the dogs and as such, a team went to the location and brought the dogs back to Nambol PS .
The animalambulance team of Bishnupur also arrived at the PS and conducted medical check-ups of the dogs.
The investigating officer produced the vendor, Suran and the five dogs before JMFC Imphal West-II late Tuesday evening.
The magistrate, after listening to submissions of both sides, remanded the vendor to three days in police custody, and made to the pay the transportation charges to People for Animals Manipur while the dogs were placed at the animal shelter operated by State Animal Welfare Board in Porompat.
The release informed that Suran had purchased the dogs from different individuals for prices ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 .
He reportedly slays dogs daily, cooking them for sale at Rs 800 to Rs l,000per kilogram.
The rescued dogs had been confined in the bags for around five days.
People for Animals Manipur expressed their deepest appreciation to the personnel at Nambol police station for their role in the rescue.
