While highlighting that menstruation is a natural biological process symbolising strength and fertility and should not be shrouded in shame or secrecy, the member secretary said: "This is a time to educate, speak openly, and empower with compassion" .
Speaking on the occasion, MSCW chairperson Th Tiningpham Monsang reiterated the Commission's commitment to advancing menstrual health and hygiene.
She underscored that menstrual well-being is crucial to the empowerment and overall health of women and girls.
MSCW's initiatives are aligned with the global movement to normalise menstruation and ensure access to necessary resources, education, and support, said the chairperson.
Tiningpham also reflected on the evolution of Menstrual Hygiene Day, rioting its origin as a social media campaign launched by WASH United, a Germany-based NGO, in 2013.The campaign sought to break the silence around menstruation and promote healthy practices.
Gaining widespread attention, it was officially designated as an international awareness day in 2014, with May 28 observed annually, she elaborated.
As part of the programme; MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) Dr Matte Siba, and nutritionist Dr Changmei S Ninghsen, delivered lectures on 'Menstrual Health' and Hygiene', and 'Health and Wellness', respectively.
The event was attended by MSCW members Chuong-sin Koireng and SK Sophia Moyon, along with around 70 residents of the ST Girls' Hostel.
