Imphal, June 21 2025:
Concerns are apparently rising about the negative impact of the Modi-led government's economic policies on laborers and workers.
Many citizens feel neglected, losing hope of receiving any support from the government, with the power resting with capitalists.
Against this backdrop, central trade unions are planning to organise a nationwide general strike on July 9 .
In a press conference held at Irawat Bhavan, BT Road on Saturday, the All India Trade Union Congress, Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar declared support for the proposed strike and informed that a convention of representatives from various central trade unions, associations, and federations was held at 9 am, during which they decided to show solidarity with the nationwide general strike on July 9.On this day, all banks, postal services, central government offices, BSNL, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, and midday meal workers will cease operations.
Many have already expressed their interest to participate, and numerous sectors have voiced their support, he noted.
Sotinkumar explained that the general strike is a protest against capitalism and the oppression of the working classes through privatisation policies, the sale of key infrastructures, and the government's continued transfer of responsibilities to private corporations.
He outlined several demands, including increasing the monthly honorarium for ASHA and Anganwadi workers to Rs.26,000, and extending the working days under the MGNREGA scheme to 200 days.
Other demands include restoring free movement along national highways, establishing a highway protection force, achieving a political solution for the state, upholding the territorial integrity of Manipur, halting the privatisation of public sector undertakings and other infrastructures, strengthening the public sector, implementing the old pension scheme, withdrawing the NEP, and preserving workers' unity.
