Critics vital for survival of performing arts: A Khelchandra

A three-day performance analysis workshop organised by the Critics Forum Manipur (CFM) under the Chief Ministergi Artistsingi Tengbang (CMAT) scheme to commemorate 100 years of Manipuri play (drama) concluded on Tuesday at the auditorium of Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory, Langthabal Kunja.
Addressing attendees of the workshop, CFM general secretary Athokpam Khelchandra said that the role of critics is enormous for survival and promotion of performing art forms of Manipur which have found a place on the global platform.
He, however, noted that while Manipur boasts of numerous performing art forms, some have gone extinct, and others are on the brink of extinction.

"It is the critics who can provide a new direction for the survival and promotion of these art forms.
Thus, with the objective of producing capable critics and establishing a community of critics, the Critics Forum Manipur (CFM) was formed in 2005," he informed.
According to Khelchandra, the Critics Forum Manipur shouldered immense responsibility for survival and promotion of performing arts of Manipur since the past 25 years.
Counting from the first ever performance of Manipuri play (drama) titled 'Narsingh' in the year 1925, the journey of Manipuri drama completed 100 years and the workshop was organised in this connection with financial assistance from CMAT scheme, he said, adding that 47 individuals took part in the workshop organised with the objective of producing fresh and young critics.
The valedictory function of the workshop was also attended by Critics Forum Manipur president Dr N Premchand, and DM College of Arts principal professor S Lanchenba Meetei.
