Imphal, March 22 2025:
Nungba MLA Dinganglung Gangmei has stressed the need to learn other indigenous languages of the state in addition to Meeteilon.
He made the statement at the celebration of Freshers' Meet cum Culture Meet 2025 of Tribal Students' Union of DM College of Arts, DMU at the hall of JNMDA on Saturday.
Observing that many new organisations are emerging in the state, contributing to increased chaos and confusion, Dinganglung urged for a reduction in the number of student bodies or organisations in the state.
He remarked that Meeteilon is the common language of the state, enabling various indigenous communities to communicate with one another.
He, however, stressed the need for the Meetei community to learn other indigenous languages, such as Tangkhul.
He asserted that it is time to incorporate the study of these languages at the school, college, and university levels.
In his speech, Chingai MLA Khasim Vashum stated that Manipur does not belong to one community but to all.
He acknowledged that there have been clashes between different communities in the past, none of which have benefited the state.
"It is time for all communities to embrace one language, which is unity, rather than speaking their own languages only.
Only then will peace be achievable," he said, highlighting that education should not be about remaining aloof but about being aware and proactive.
Thongju MLA Th Biswajit said that there is no end to learning.
Students would come across changes with time and must cultivate the ability to go along with the changes or else there would be no progress or development, he added.
During the celebration, which was attended by DM College of Art Prof Lanchenba Meetei and others, various cultural performances were presented.
