Imphal, May 02 2025:
Environment and Climate Change director Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar has emphasised the harmful impact of single-use plastic on the environment and urged the public to switch to reusable alternatives.
He was speaking at an awareness campaign on the "Elimination of Single-Use Plastics" organised by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur Pollution Control Board, and Kangleipak Women's Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited at Wangkhei Andro Parking market on Thursday.
During the campaign, cloth arid paper bags, produced by Self-Help Groups (SHGs), were distributed to women vendors as part of the initiative to reduce plastic waste.
Dr Brajakumar highlighted that the environmental degradation caused by single-use plastics has become a significant global challenge.
He noted that single-use plastics, which are inexpensive and widely available, cause extensive damage to the environment.
The central government had already implemented a ban on such plastics due to their adverse effects, he reminded.
The director also mentioned that similar efforts have been undertaken at the state level to enforce the plastic ban and encouraged the public to adopt biodegradable alternatives.
He pointed out that SHGs are being engaged to produce cloth and paper bags as eco-friendly substitutes.
He called for the community's support in these efforts.
A similar campaign was also held on Friday at Singjamei Keithel.
