CBFC seeks Cinematograph Act enforcement in state

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has advised the government of Manipur to ensure strict enforcement of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, across the state, highlighting that all films, videos, advertisements, trailers, promos, video songs and any other visual presentations must be certified by the Board before public exhibition.
In a letter addressed to the chief secretary on June 23, 2025, CBFC, Guwahati, additional regional officer Dipankar Gogo stated that CBFC is the sole authority for certification of films for public exhibition in India and that its Guwahati Regional Office is entrusted with this responsibility for all Northeast states.
The letter requested the chief secretary to issue necessary instructions to the district administrations in Manipur to ensure that no films or videos are publicly exhibited anywhere in the state without the requisite certification from the CBFC, in order to comply with the Cinematograph Act, 1952.While noting that offences relating to violations of certification provisions under the Act are cognizable and non-bailable, the letter suggested that appropriate actions can be initiated by district administrations under Sections 7 and 7Aof the Cinematograph Act, 1952, read with the Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973) .
The CBFC officer also re quested the state government to do the needful for preventing unauthorised exhibitions and ensuring compliance.
