Imphal, May 09 2025:
A one-day awareness programme on the role of the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) was held on Friday at Heingang Gram Panchayat community hall, Imphal East.
The event was jointly organised by MSCW and Spiritual Women Organization, Heingang Mayai Leikai.
Speaking at the event, MSCW chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, highlighted the importance of conducting awareness initiatives that foster gender equality and empower women along with emphasising that both men and women contribute equally - each accounting for fifty per cent - in nation-building and economic development.
She further elaborated on the Commission's activities and commitment to achieving full gender equality by 2030.The MSCW chairperson noted that the concept of gender equality is often misinterpreted, while clarifying that it fundamentally revolves around education and understanding the true essence of women's empowerment.
Quoting the adage, "Men build houses, women build homes," she encouraged women to recognise their inherent potential, pursue education, and embrace the deeper meaning of empowerment.
MSCW member SK Sophia Moyon reaffirmed that the Commission exists to protect, support, and raise awareness among women.
She urged women to actively participate in such programmes and to become proactive agents of change in their communities.
Sophia highlighted that the Manipur State Commission for Women Act, 2006, was enacted to address and resolve all issues related to women's rights and welfare in the state.
She stressed the importance of responsiveness in the digital era, noting that the Commission has so far registered 1,266 cases, of which 1,250 have been successfully resolved - either through mutual understanding or legal recourse.
The most common cases pertain to domestic violence, harassment, rape, molestation, divorce, and child custody matters.
Sophia encouraged women to come forward without hesitation and register their grievances, assuring them that the process is entirely free of charge.
She also urged the participants to learn about and take advantage of government welfare schemes designed for women.
As part of the technical session, Dr Ch Narendra Singh, advocate, and Gurumayum Ravi Sharma presented their insights on "The Role of MSCW" and "Government Schemes for Women under the Social Welfare Department" .
