Tributes paid to communist leader Mohendra

Communist leader (late) Ngangom Mohendra was remembered on his 100th birth anniversary in a function held at Manipur Press Club on Wednesday.
Mohendra's birth centenary celebration organised by Ngangom Mohendra Birth Centenary Celebration Committee was attended by CPI Manipur State Council Control Commission chairman Langol Iboyaima, film maker Aribam Syam Sharma, historian professor N Joykumar, former acting chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission Khaidem Mani and CPI central control commission member Dr M Nara as presidium members.
Delivering the key note address, CPI Manipur secretary L Thoirel said Ngangom Mohendra was born on April 9, 1925 at Uripok Haobam Dewan Leikai and joined CPI in the year 1946 .

Since joining CPI, Ngangom Mohendra started working for downtrodden sections of the society and accordingly worked with communist leaders.
He participated in public movement launched by students and later became state executive of CPI and national council member of the party, In 1977, Mohendra contested the 6th Lok Sabha election from Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency but suffered defeat.
He, however, won in the 7th Lok Sabha election held in 1980 from the same constituency with the support of the people.
Important issues Ngangom Mohendra raised while he was MP include inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, ending excessive actions of security forces, rail line to Manipur and opening of Doordarshan, L Thoirel said adding that Mohendra was also a hard-line critic and stood firmly against false propaganda.
