Awareness on 'Save Maha River' held

Kakching, October 03 2023: An awareness programme cum cleanliness drive under the theme 'Save Maha River' was held at South East Manipur Higher Secondary School, Kapaam (SEMHSS) in Chandel district on Monday.

The awareness cum cleanliness drive was jointly organised by Nature's Club, SEMHSS, Eco Club and South East Manipur College (SEMCO) to highlight the urgent need to preserve the Maha River which serves as the sole lifeline of Kapaam and surrounding villages.

Assistant professor Cr William Moyon of SEMCO spoke on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Swachhata Hi Seva arid made the participants aware about its objectives, importance and need.

He emphasised on the concept of sanitation as every individual's responsibility through voluntarism.

Assistant professor Sweety Roel, who is also SEMCO and Eco Club convener, expressed concern over mindless littering and disposal of garbage and waste near the river and urged youth to make conscious effort for spreading awareness as well as contribute their bit in preserving Maha river.

SEMHSS principal Rumeensha Nguwruw Moyon lamented the considerable reduction in the volume of water in the river over the years and said that it should be taken as a warning sign by everyone.

People rely on Maha River as it is the main source of drinking water but pollution has renders the water unfit for drinking and creates various health prdblems, she said, adding that cases of typhoid increased in the area in recent years.
