Imphal, August 26 2023: Expressing strong disapproval of the one-day Manipur Legislative Assembly session convened on August 29, former Chief Minister and CLP leader Okram Ibobi walked out of a Business Advisory Committee held today after submitting a dissent note.

Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, O Ibobi stated that the one-day monsoon session of the State Assembly would not serve any public interest.

He then claimed that the activities of the Opposition party (Congress) are guided by public interest and aspirations.

"Given the State's critical situation, we have many things to say," Ibobi said before asking if the one-day session would serve any public interest.

"I urged the Business Advisory Committee to extend the session to at least five days but no other participant of the meeting expressed any opinion.

"I pointed out that the one-day session is not in public interest and submitted a dissent note before walking out of the meeting", Ibobi conveyed.

Perhaps, it is the first time in the whole country that a State Assembly is holding its session for a single day.

The incumbent Government is flouting all rules and laws, he said.

MLA K Ranjit remarked that the one-day monsoon session of the State Assembly convened on August 29 is both illegal and unconstitutional.

The one-day session is nothing more than an excuse for the ruling MLAs and Ministers to protect themselves, Ranjit said.

The Congress party and the people have been urging to hold an Assembly session so that the violent crisis besieging Manipur can be deliberated at length, he said.

The Government may face a very difficult situation if one someone files a petition at the Supreme Court against violation of the Constitution.

If President's Rule is imposed in the State as a result of violating the Constitution, the incumbent Government should be held accountable, Ranjit said.

As per the Constitution, there should be an Assembly session in every six months.

The State Assembly is the most important platform for all the people's representatives.

The Assembly session must go on for at least four/five days and the elected representatives should adopt a resolution so as to bring peace and normalcy in the State, Ranjit said.

Questioning the Government's refusal to hold the session for at least four/five days and adopt a resolution to restore peace in the State, the Congress MLA asked whether the BJP led Government has any intention to keep the ember of violence burning, the violence which started from May 3 .
