Imphal, August 26 2023:
An official team of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) led by its chairperson UB Shaha and member KK Singh visited Central Jail Sajiwa and reviewed the condition of illegal Myanmarese, who are staying at the foreigner detention centre, Sajiwa on Saturday.
The team inspected the facilities being provided to the inmates and interacted with them.
There are 105 Myanmarese nationals in the detention centre and they include 75 men, 24 women and six children.
One of them is a resident of Bangladesh.
They were detained from Churachandpur and Moreh under Foreigners' Act 1946 .
During the interaction with the help of some inmates familiar with Hindi or English, the MHRC chairperson enquired about the food and basic amenities being provided to them in the Centre.
He also asked the centre in-charge to provide necessary medical care to two pregnant women.
From there, the team also assessed the conditions of Myanmarese convicts, who are spending their jail time after getting arrested for involvement in different crimes.
Some of them were found to have completed their sentence term and are in process for deportation.
Officials told the MHRC team that deportation is a lengthy process and not receiving approval from Myanmarese authority has been a hurdle in deporting them.
The MHRC chairperson told the jail officials that the commission will prepare a report and submit the same to the authority concerned.
