Land dispute turns ugly in Thoubal
Mob damage house, police fire tear gas shells

Thoubal, April 21 2025:
A land dispute in Thoubal district turned ugly today with mobs destroying a shop and a house, and police firing tear gas shells.
The incident occurred at around 9.30 am near Arongthong on Asian Highway, under Khangabok Assembly Constituency.
The properties damaged in the violent dispute belong to one Waikhom Somendro (53) .
His house, shop and pillars of an under-construction building were destroyed by a large number of people, said sources.
To control the mob, police resorted to firing tear gas shells.
Sources said Somendro was accused of building his house "encroaching" on the road, and it triggered the incident today.

He has also been accused of building his house by "blocking" the public road, and was reportedly warned many times, said the sources.
On the other hand, Somendro's family claim there has already been an agreement regarding the dispute.
The incident today happened suddenly with a large number of people from "Khangabok side" storming the properties, they said.
