Imphal, August 17 2025:
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, organised a plastic-free campus drive today under the Swachhta Action Plan 2025-26, reaffirming its commitment to a clean, green, and sustainable environment.
Led by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, the campaign covered all major areas of the campus, including approach roads, hostels, the hospital complex, the Dental College, the College of Nursing, and academic departments.
During the drive, it was noted that the stretch between Gate No 1 and Gate No 2 was heavily littered with gutka packets, cigarette butts, and plastic bottles.
Authorities advised street vendors not to occupy the area and informed that the Government authority has been urged for relocation of the auto parking zone and vendor areas to a suitable site, said RIMS in a statement.
The institute also reiterated that the Supreme Court of India has upheld COTPA 2003, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.
This is reinforced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's Guidelines for Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI), mandating prohibition boards.
RIMS reaffirmed its strict stand against tobacco sales and use within and around the campus, it added.
During the drive, the Director of RIMS urged students, faculty, staff, and the community to take collective responsibility for a plastic-free environment and work towards making RIMS a model institution for eco-friendly practices.
The campaign saw active participation from the Medical Superintendent, Deputy Director (Admn), Dean (Academics), Principal of Nursing, Heads of Departments, officials, staff, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA), RIMSSU, CRED, and MSS, RIMS said.
