Shortage of surgeons

Imphal, June 15 2025:
Prof N Somorjit, chairman of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), Manipur Chapter, has stated that the State's surgical services are being hampered by a shortage of surgeons, limiting access to comprehensive care.
He made the statement during a Surgeon Day 2025 held at the conference hall of Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Lamphelpat today.
The programme was organised by Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur Chapter in collaboration with IMA, Manipur State branch.
At the event, Prof Somorjit said that Manipur, with a population of approximately 28 lakh, has only around 200 surgeons which he said is inadequate.
Initiatives are underway to raise the number of PG surgery students at RIMS, JNIMS, and SHIJA Academy of Health Services, he said, highlighting the necessity of increasing the surgical workforce in Manipur.
He, meanwhile, said that they organised Surgeons Week from June 8 to 14 at different places featuring various activities such as a cyclathon, free surgical consultations, and voluntary blood donation camps among others.
Former RIMS Director Prof Dr Ng Bijoy, the chief guest, also emphasized the need for collective efforts to increase the number of surgeons in the State.
President of IMA, Manipur Dr Simpson Sareo and ASI Manipur Chapter Dr Dhanabir Thangjam also attended the programme among others.
The event also included presentation of simple gifts to retired surgeons as a token of appreciation.
