Imphal, August 11 2025:
Even as awareness on the environment has spread far and wide, Nambul River in the heart of Imphal city seems unable to shake off the spell that has it as one of the most polluted rivers in Manipur.
There have been different projects including a sewerage project, and many cleanliness campaigns to clean the river bed and the water, but none has had a lasting impact.
The Nambul River still runs turbid, murky and full of filth.
While the river has been neglected and ignored, some are even dumping runoff from pig-farm into the river, polluting the water.
An outlet from a pigsty is clearly seen feeding pig waste and runoff into the river on the Keishamthong Kabui Khul side of the river bank.
The outlet is clearly visible, but no one has complained.
With no inspections done, the relevant Government authorities too are not aware of the outlet that is contributing to the increasing level of pollution.

When asked about the pollution in the river, a local of Keishamthong told The Sangai Express that the Government authorities must strictly implement policies to clean the river system and make the water safe and free of pollution.
The locals of the area, especially those residing on the banks of the river and commuters must be aware of their actions and not pollute the river by throwing waste materials and bottles, said the man.
The people and the Government are equally responsible.
The outlet from the pigsty is clearly visible from the road.
The locals aren't taking action, so the Government authorities must take appropriate action, he added.
The Nambul River falls into the Loktak Lake.
Therefore, any pollution here would ultimately pollute Loktak, he said.
Another person from the area said, "The river system has improved somewhat.
However, it is still not safe for people to use.
The public and especially the Government must sincerely implement projects to clean the river system and make it free from pollution".
People should stop disposing of waste, plastic bottles into the river body and the banks.
The river will heal once people stop polluting it, said the person.
