Imphal, February 06 2026:
The Inpui Naga Youth Organisation (INYO) has condemned the 'indiscriminate gunfire' by Kuki militants at Waphong area, where civilians were 'adeliberately' targeted while collecting forest vegetation.
In a statement, INYO claimed that the armed assailants opened continuous fire between 3.30 pm and 4.40 pm from locations surrounding poppy cultivation sites.
The statement, however, did not mention the specific day on which the attack took place.
Taking strong exception to the attack, the Union urged the Government to initiate an independent and impartial investigation into the incident.
Claiming that security agencies present in the vicinity didn't intervene despite ninety minutes of continuous gunfire, the Union demanded immediate identification and prosecution of the perpetrators, a formal inquiry into the apparent failure of security forces to protect civilians, and the deployment of adequate security arrangements in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
INYO also claimed that the civilians were attacked following aerial drone surveillance, which it described as a grave violation of human rights and humanitarian principles.
It also claimed that underground militants are residing at the poppy plantation farms to protect those harvesting poppy crops.
Such acts of violence against civilians are unacceptable in any civilised society, INYO said and urged the Government and authorities concerned to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety, dignity and rights of all civilians.
