Two killed in road mishaps

A police Constable and another man were killed in two separate incidents of road accidents last night.
A team of Patsoi police station was returning to their station in a Tata Sumo after taking some people to medical test for consuming alcohol when the Tata Sumo went out of control over Lansonbi bridge between Yurembam and Sagoltongba, and fell into Maklang River at around 12.30 am.
The police team put the suspected drinkers on a Tata Sumo and took them to PHC Khumbong for medical checkup.
It is said that the headlights of the Tata Sumo in which the suspected drinkers were taken to the PHC were not working.
Nonetheless, some police personnel closely followed the Tata Sumo in a Tata DI .
When the Tata DI reached Lansonbi Bridge, the Tata Sumo travelling ahead was found to have fallen into the Maklang River.
Those who were travelling in the Tata Sumo were evacuated and rushed to RIMS and Raj Medicity.
But Constable Soibam Sanjit (34) s/o late S Tomba of Salam Mayai Leikai was declared dead by the doctor.
After post mortem at RIMS mortuary, top police officers paid their last respect to the lifeless body of Constable Soibam Sanjit at 1 st Battalion Manipur Rifles parade ground.
Later, the last rites of the deceased Constable were held at his native village.
Notably, Sanjit's wife died last year and the phiroi ceremony was solemnised not long ago.
They left behind a four year old son.
Six other police personnel including one civilian were also injured in the accident.
On the other hand, one Umesh Dhungana (39) s/o Khageshwor Dhungana of Kanglatongbi Mandir was killed when a car (Tiago) rammed a two-wheeler (TVS Heavy Duty) at Sekmai Nongthonband (near Pal Hotel) at around 6.30 pm yesterday.
Umesh Dhungana, injured in the accident, was first rushed to CHC Sekmai from where he was referred to Little Clinic, Nagaram but he succumbed to the injuries at around 9.40 pm.
The body of Umesh Dhungana has been handed over to family members after post mortem at RIMS mortuary.
