Senapati, June 04 2025:
Sensing urgent need to find alternate route to transport essential commodities to Manipur after the state has been cut off by a massive landslide near Phesama village in Nagaland, Mao MLA Losii Dikho carried out physical survey of the Mao-Chakabama bypass road via Kedima village on Wednesday.
After the survey, MLA Dikho called for immediate repairing of the route to facilitate uninterrupted flow of passenger movement and operation of six-wheeled trucks ferrying essential items to Manipur.
He said that the surveyed route is the alternate lifeline to Manipur till repairing of the Phesama landslide site as other routes like NH-37 Imphal-Jiribam highway and Maram-Peren 129/A also face frequent landslides and distance is much longer compared to the Mao-Chakhabama route.
The MLA informed media persons after the survey that the stretch from Mao (NH-2 Martyr's park point) till Kedima (Nagaland) is only 8 km and from Mao to Chakhabama en-route to Kohima only 26 km.
However, the alternate route has not been maintained for long and its condition worsened over the years while portion of the road in Nagaland side is better and broad.
During the survey, it was found that six-wheeled vehicles and other vehicles will be able to ply despite narrow stretch in Manipur sector until the NH-2 road is restored, he added.
MLA Losii Dikho further said that the massive landslide at Phesama prompted Kohima DC to issue travel advisory to stop all Manipur bound heavy trucks from Zubza and Dimapur bound trucks at Khuzama.
Light vehicles have been advised to take the Chakhabama detour to Mao via Kedima.
Comprehending possible delay in restoration of the NH-2, the MLA said, he personally went for inspection along the Chakhabama to Mao route, which is quite feasible for vehicles including 6-wheeler trucks to supply essential commodities if serious repair works are taken up.
The distance from NH-2 to Kedima is just 8 km and 18 km to Chakhabama from Kedima, the MLA said adding that light vehicles and 6-wheeler trucks can conveniently operate if it is repaired immediately.
The MLA also said that he had already requested chief minister of Nagaland to repair the route in Nagaland sector to which the CM assured to immediately look into the matter.
The same would be apprised to state government so that the route could be utilised as alternate lifeline until NH-2 road is restored in order to supply essential commodities into the state, he added.
