Imphal, January 18, 2011:
One truck terminus each on NH-39 and NH-53 would be built within the 12th Five Year Plan period under the North Eastern Council (NEC) in addition to development of two multi storage car parking facilities at Khwairamband Keithel.
According to an official source, the initiative to build inter-State truck terminals (ISTT) on NH-39 and NH-53 was taken up to ameliorate the inconveniences and difficulties encountered by transporters along the two highways due to frequent bandhs and blockades.
The Government of Manipur would provide requisite plots for construction of the two ISTTs on NH-39 and NH-53. The proposed ISTTs would include dormitory for drivers, warehouse, shopping mall, landscaping etc.
The Transport Department has already completed preparation of concept papers for the two ISTTs.
The concept papers would be submitted to the NEC before March as the 12th Five Year Plan period is beginning from the month of April.
Likewise, concept papers for the two proposed multi storage car parking lots at Khwairamband Keithel have also been prepared and the same would be submitted to the NEC very soon.
It is estimated that the construction of the two multi storage car parking lots would cost around Rs 30 crores.
Similar multi storage car parking lots have been already developed in certain cities of some North Eastern States under NEC funding.
The two multi storeyed parking lots would have capacity of parking 1000 cars simultaneously.
One would be constructed at the southern side of Khwairamband and the other on the northern side.
However, as of now no exact spots have been identified for the proposed parking lots.
On the other hand, the Transport Dept would be submitting concept papers to the NEC very soon for launching helicopter service between Imphal and Jiribam via Tamenglong thrice a week and also between Imphal and Moreh on daily basis, conveyed the source.
