Tributes paid to War heroes at Manao Hill

Kakching, April 23 2025:
A floral tribute ceremony was held on Wednesday at Manao Hill in Kakching Chumnang Leikai to honour Major Wangkhei Meiraba, Leishangthem Amu, and other unknown warriors who sacrificed their lives for their motherland during the battle against the British at Kakching Manao Hill in 1891, as part of the Anglo-Manipuri War.
The event jointly organised by People's Museum Kakching, Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur), Major Wangkhei Meiraba Memorial Trust and Leishangthem Amu Memorial Trust, was attended by Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar, Justice Committee president Joychandra Konthoujam and former Kakching MLA Y Surchandra as chief guest, president and special guest respectively while Kakching Municipal Council caretaker chairperson Naorem Sanjitkumar, IPSA president Maibam Bisheshwor, Wangkhei Meiraba's grandson Wangkheimayum Opendro, Leishangthem Amu's grandson Leishangthem Achouba were the guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, MLA Arunkumar pointed out the need to include the stories of Manipur's freedom fighters and martyrs in the school curriculum.
He expressed that it would help students better understand the courage and sacrifices made by the Manipuri forefathers for the motherland, ensuring- that their legacy is carried forward by future generations.
He added that it is not enough to remember the martyrs for just a day.
MLA Th Arunkumar further noted that there are many controversies and differing opinions regarding Manipur's history, and stressed the importance of coming together to uncover and share the truth collectively with both present and future generations.
According to him, the lack of timely initiatives and actions has led to the challenges the state is currently facing.
While pointing out that the failure to preserve and promote historical sites has resulted in the gradual disappearance of many of them, he stressed the urgent need to identify and protect these valuable historical landmarks.

NSS Units, Waikhom Mani Girls' College, Lions Club Thoubal Greater Centurion and Voluntary Donor Group Manipur, under the aegis of Thoubal district administration conducted a blood donation camp at Khongjom War Memorial Complex.
During the camp held with support from National Health Mission Manipur State Blood Cell, RIMS Department of Transfusion Medicine and JNIMS Blood Centre under the theme 'Give Blood to our Martyrs of Manipur', 124 persons including 36 women donated blood.
