Imphal, July 11 2025:
A two-day national conference on the topic "North East India: A Way Forward" organised by Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) Research Club and Internal Quality Assurance Cell commenced at the PG Science Block conference hall of the varsity on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest of the inauguration programme, DMU vice chancellor professor W Chandbabu highlighted the race among the developed nations in the field of technology, higher education, entrepreneurship and economic development, with an eye on firming their grip on global geopolitics.
In this context, he stressed the need for the northeast denizens to reflect and chalk up strategies to counter the emerging challenges.
He pointed out that the Northeast region, which shares international borders of over 3,500 km with countries like China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, holds significant strategic importance for India.
"It is essential for the people of this region to understand their unique geopolitical role in the country," he remarked.
Professor Chandbabu further noted that the North-East faces numerous challenges, with inadequate infrastructure being the most pressing issue.
He observed that while India and the region fall under the 'emerging market economy' category, the necessary foundational services and systems have not been adequately addressed.
"There exists a large gap between demand and supply.
Despite demand, services are often lacking, leading to multiple issues," he said, citing poor road conditions, law and order concerns and ethnic conflicts as key examples.
He called for collective efforts to address these issues and work towards long-term solutions.
Presided over by DMU Students' Welfare dean professor Thiyam Rabikanta, the function was also attended by DMU IQAC director professor RK London and Nagaland University Management Department head professor Khundrakpam Devananda as guests of honour.
