Imphal, July 08 2025:
Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) president Nongthombam Suraj has clarified that the union did not remain silent over the alleged incident involving two male teachers conducting body searches of female students during an undergraduate examination, asserting that MUSU took timely and appropriate action to address the matter.
Addressing a press meet at MUSU office on Tuesday, Suraj said that the incident occurred on July 4 during the first paper of UG BEd second semester examination, when two male members of a flying squad allegedly conducted a physical search of female students.
The same evening, around 6 o'clock, a group of angry students approached the MUSU office and filed a complaint.
Suraj said that MUSU executive members immediately met with the students to discuss the best course of actions.
However, due to the late hour, they could not forward the complaint to the Dean of Students' Welfare the same day, he clarified.
On the following day despite being a holiday on account of Kanglen, the MUSU reached out to relevant university officials, who held discussions with the complainant students, Suraj recounted, adding that the union then forwarded the complaint to the Dean of Students' Welfare, who subsequently referred the case to the university's Students' Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC).
Even with July 6 also being a holiday, SGRC members reviewed the matter, and preparations were underway the following Monday to record statements from the complainants as part of formal proceedings.
"It was during this time that tensions escalated, leading to unwarranted public commentary on the incident," he said.
Calling recent public statements on the incident misleading, Suraj expressed concern that the matter was made public in such a way to mislead the public while the enquiry was already ongoing.
"The remarks made are akin to maligning the image of MUSU and the university," the president rued.
He emphasised that MUSU had not remained silent but had acted responsibly to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Suraj appealed to all concerned to avoid spreading misinformation and urged the grievance committee to complete its enquiry at the earliest.
