Imphal, April 03 2025:
Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) has submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, listing imperative actions as a follow-up to the tragic earthquake that occurred in Myanmar on March 28 .
The memorandum, also addressed to Union ministers and chief ministers of North-eastern states, highlighted the dire scenario in Myanmar and advocated for a multi-dimensional course of action towards addressing the present crisis.
In a release, AIMS director Dr Atom Sunil Singh noted that the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake and aftershock measuring magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale claimed the lives of over 3000 people, caused widespread destruction disrupting essential infrastructure, such as power and communications, and cutting off access to many regions.
Considering the magnitude of the disaster and Myanmar ravaged by civil strife, the memorandum demanded urgent international unity and action.
It proposed immediate deployment of equipment such as excavators and cranes for rescue efforts and removal of debris, temporary and regulated opening of the India-Myanmar border in Moreh sector for speedy and effective delivery of goods and resources, urgent supply of commodities such as masks, potable water, medical supplies, and despatch of Indian medical teams for supporting emergency medical care services to affected areas, etc.
The memorandum also suggested the use of solar microgrids and generators to rebuild electricity in devastated areas and intensive diplomatic action to push for ceasefires both in Myanmar and in Manipur to facilitate unhindered delivery of aid and security for all parties.
Along with emphasising the necessity of 'Seismic Microzonation' in Northeast India to better prepare and reduce the impact of possible future earthquakes, it called for creating specific building codes and construction methods to improve resilience.
