Imphal, November 29 2023:
Dr RK Sunita Devi, additional CEO of the State Level Nodal Agency for Watershed Management, Planning Department, participated as a speaker and session chair at the 9th International Conference on Water Resource and Environment (WRE 2023) held from November 21-24, in Matsue, Japan.
Her presentation focused on "Towards Effective Geospatial Techniques for Watershed Management - A Case Study from Manipur, India," where she shared insights alongside professors and scholars from Japan, Taiwan, China, Hongkong, Macao, Turkey, India, Croatia, UK, and Canada.
Dr Sunita's paper emphasised the use of geospatial technologies to delineate thematic layers like geology, hydrogeomorphology, drainage, land use/land cover, and watersheds in .8-digit codification.
A drainage raster Was prepared to identify high and low-priority locations, serving as a valuable tool for proposing water-harvesting structures and management interventions at the micro-watershed level.
The study suggested a bottom-to-top approach with community involvement in micro-watersheds for effective intervention.
The use of ASTER data aided in designing a DEM model for plantation activities, contributing to increased soil moisture content and enhanced water table.
She also highlighted the study's potential for further research on carbon sequestration and carbon footprint assessments within Manipur's forests for climate change studies.
The database created for various thematic layers is envisioned to serve as legacy data for future research.
Dr Sunita discussed the successful implementation of the PMKSY 2.0 WDC programme by the Planning Department during her presentation.
