Workshop on gender-based violence held

State PC & PNDT Gell, Directorate of Family Welfare Services on Tuesday organised a sensitisation workshop for medical officers on 'PC & PNDT Act, Rules, Gender Discrimination and Gender-based violence' at JNIMS auditorium.
In his address, PC & PNDT Cell chairman cum Family Welfare additional director Chambo Golmei cautioned against use of modern technology for gender determination and foeticide of female foetus.
Reflecting on such crimes in mainland India mainly stemming from long existing dowry system, he cautioned on its adverse effect on gender ratio of a region, and exhorted the people to stand for gender equality and fight against such discriminations.
The government of India implemented the PNDT Act in 1994 to prevent gender determination of foetus and the Act was reviewed on 2003 as PC & PNDT Act by adding pre-conception, he informed.
The additional director also cautioned medical practitioners to refrain from misusing the modern technology to commit such crimes and advised medical practitioners for proper registration to open a laboratory and purchase machines necessary from registered companies.
JNIMS director L Deven stressed on the need for all to treat the children equally regardless of their gender and also called upon the medical practitioners to spread awareness to the public and never deviate from the ethical code.
The event was attended by Family Welfare Services director L Tomcha and JNIMS MS Kh Lokeshwar among others.
