Imphal, March 05 2024:
Dr Chambo Gonmei, Chairman, Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC & PNDT) Cell has called for an immediate end to pre-natal sex determination diagnostic techniques which may lead to female foeticide.
The PC & PNDT Chairman of the Directorate of Family Welfare Services was speaking at the one day sensitization workshop for medical officers on PC & PNDT Act Rule, gender discrimination and gender based violence held at JNIMS Auditorium, Porompat, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Chambo Gonrnei highlighted the growing incidence of female foeticide and the declining sex ratio of the State.
Maintaining that society largely appears to prefer baby boys to baby girls, Dr Gonmei pointed out that it would be impossible for a society to exist without women.
The financial strain of marrying off girls is another reason why some parents prefer to have boys but this is a poor example for favouring boys, Dr Gonmei added.
Stating that conducting sex screening tests of the unborn baby and aborting the foetus if it turns out to be a girl is against the law, Dr Gonmei urged doctors to do away with acts which pose a direct challenge to society.
The function was also attended by Dr Tomcha, Director, Directorate of Family Welfare Services; Dr L Deben, Director, JNIMS and Dr Kh Lokeshwar, Medical Superintendent, JNIMS among others.
