Imphal, July 10 2025:
Ima Panthoibi Khuman Lampak Street Vendors' Union has cautioned of launching intense stir if their stalls are dismantled, adding that this is a matter of survival.
Briefing the media at Manipur Press Club here on Thursday, Union president Kh Chandrajini said that the street vendors have been plying their wares on both the northern and southern flanks of Khuman Lampak Dingku road for a long time.
She continued that repeated assurances were given to the Union that a market shed would be constructed for the street vendors.
However, they have been informed by police that the stalls would be demolished by 3 pm of July 11.As such, she urged authorities concerned to allow the street vendors to continue their business in the area until a suitable location is provided.
Union secretary Rajkumari Sapam Indira recounted that the DC issued an order on July 5, informing that no street vendors would be allowed to continue operating their stalls.
She questioned how and where the street vendors, who are feeding their families with the meagre income from selling their wares, are supposed to set up shop.
Indira continued that those vendors had been urging for providing them with a suitable location for a long time.
The vendors had just begun coming out of the misery of the two-year long conflict.
She then asked how the vendors are going to live if their stalls are dismantled.
Thus, she urged the government not to demolish the stalls while considering the plight of the vendors.
Stating that the Union is a registered body, she informed that there are around 700 members registered under the Union, which covers the area from Khongnang Karak of Khuman Lampak to Dingku Road.
As such, she cautioned that if the authority decides to demolish the stalls, intense agitations would be launched.
