Moreh shutdown protests NIA arrest

Moreh town wore a deserted look on Friday afternoon as several Kuki civil society organisations imposed a total shutdown in protest against the arrest of one Kamginthang Gangte by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The shutdown, which began at noon and continue till Saturday noon, was called by the Hill Tribal Council Moreh, Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi Moreh, Kuki Women's Union & Human Rights Moreh, Kuki Chiefs' Association Moreh, Kiki Students' Organisation Moreh, and Kuki Youth Club Moreh.
In response to the protest call, all shops, business establishments and educational institutions in the border town remained shut throughout Friday.
A public meeting has been scheduled at Gangam Lengtol Ground on Saturday at 7 am, followed by a protest demonstration.
Kamginthang Gangte was reportedly picked up by NIA on Thursday afternoon.
Details surrounding the arrest have not been officially disclosed, but the move has triggered strong reactions from Kuki groups in the area.
Condemning the arrest, Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Tengnoupal district, issued a statement demanding the immediate release of Kamginthang Gangte.
It further announced an extended shutdown across Tengnoupal district from Friday 6 pm to Saturday 6 pm.
KSO appealed to all sections, including shops, businesses, transportation services, and both government and private institutions, to suspend operations during the 24-hour protest as a mark of solidarity.
While calling for public cooperation, KSO urged the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens during the shutdown.
It also announced that essential services such as medical care, water supply, electricity departments and religious activities would be exempted from the purview of the shutdown.
