State Handloom expo underway

State Handloom Expo (Hatkargha Mela) organised by Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) under the sponsorship of the Development Commissioner for Handloom and Handicrafts has commenced from Saturday at GM Hall, Imphal.
The inaugural function of the handloom expo, which will be held till January 5, was attended by MHHDCL managing director E Jeeten as chief guest, Office of the Development Commissioner deputy director Priyadarshi Daripa as president, and handicrafts and Shilp Guru awardee Gurumayum Shanti Devi as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, E Jeeten said that the corporation, under ministry, has organised three handloom expos including one national level this year.
The main objective of the expo is to encourage and promote the artisans and giving them opportunity to showcase and sell their products.
The corporation will also submit proposal to the ministry for organising such expos in different areas.
Informing that 120 applicants came to participate in the expo but only half of them were allowed to take part in it, he said that those, who could not take part in the expo will be given opportunity in the next event.
He further urged those artisans who are participating and who will be participating in the expo to have internet banking facility to accept digital payment.
The facility can be activated easily through mobile phones and it will also ease in getting different types of schemes, he continued.
Urging educated people and experts to bring up new ideas, he informed that experts, especially youths, by discussing with CSIR, are frying to make a machine that will not degrade 'Kouna' when exposed to rain: Around 60 handloom and handicraft artisans took part at the handloom expo.
