Health minister calls for reducing C-section deliveries

Observing that the prevalence of C-section deliveries is high in the state and expressing concern over the matter, health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has called upon medical practitioners to work towards reducing cases of C-section as much as possible The minister was attending the second day of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) East Zonal Conference with YUVA 2023 organised under the theme 'A healthy heart for a healthy life and a healthy women' by Imphal Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (IOGS) held at RIMS Jubilee Hall on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Ranjan said that the popularity of the country is increasing day by day in the global arena and it is the result of the collective contribution of the people.
At the same time, it also requires a visionary leader, who cares for all sections of society.
Compared with past years, the position of India in the international platform has improved significantly with advancement and achievements in different sectors including space science such as Chandrayaan-3, as well as good doctors, engineers, nurses and IT professionals among others.
Regarding the conference, the minister said that it was unfortunate that the conference could not be held in September, its usual month, but at the same time, he is happy that it is being conducted now.
He acknowledged the contribution of FOGSI in the obstetrics and gynaecology section of the healthcare system in the state.
Pregnancy is the only diagnostic test for which people welcome positive test results and it is the objective of every patient and doctor for pregnant women and their babies returning home safe after delivery.
Unfortunately, the state is witnessing an increasing trend of C-section delivery, which needs to be checked and it will require collective efforts of both the public and doctors, he said.
As per WHO guidelines, the acceptable rate of C-section delivery should be 10 to 15 per cent but the state records 1712 per cent of C-section deliveiy, he said.
Expressing concern over the high rate, he urged the doctors attending the conference to help create awareness among the public to bring down the rate.
He also informed the gathering about a recent meeting with gynaecologists with the chief minister in this regard.
He further said that the institutional delivery rate in the state is 86 per cent.
Maternal Mortality rate is also low but there is the need to bring it down to single digit.
He also informed the gathering about the NCD screening service taken up by the government under the CMHA scheme, which he said, aligns with the theme of the conference.
FOGSI president Dr Hrishikesh D Pai presided over the function while secretary general Dr Madhuri Patel, RIMS director professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma and FOGSI East Zone vice-president Dr Alka Pandey attended as guests of honour.
A souvenir of the conference was also released on the occasion, which also witnessed the felicitation of IOGS senior members.
