IMPHAL, Dec 23: The Cesarean Section (CS) rate in India exceeds WHO's recommended ideal rate, which is between 10% to 15%, said Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan.
India's CS rate is 17.2 % .
Dr Sapam Ranjan said the Cesarean section rate in Manipur is also "high" .
The Minister made the statement at the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) East Zonal Conference held under the theme "A Healthy Heart for a Healthy life & a Healthy Women" at RIMS Jubilee Hall.
The conference which will continue till tomorrow is being organised by Imphal Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (IOGS) .
Speaking as chief guest, Dr Sapam Ranjan acknowledged efforts being made by FOGSI to develop and improve obstetric and gynaecology care.
While increasing institutional delivery, cesarean section rate should be brought down to an ideal rate, he said.
"India's surgical delivery--Cesarean section rate is 17%.This is higher than the World Health Organisation's recommended ideal rate of 10% to 15%," he said.
The State Government and all authorities concerned are taking up efforts to increase institutional deliveries, he said, stating that the maternal mortality rate has reduced.
All efforts must be taken up to bring the maternal mortality rate to a single digit number.
This requires efforts from doctors as well as the people, he added.
Institutional delivery means giving birth to a child in a medical institution under the supervision of trained and competent health personnel.
FOGSI president Dr Hrishikesh D Pai, secretary general Dr Madhuri Patel, RIMS Director Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma, and FOGSI East Zonal vice president Dr Alka Pandey attended the event.
