Discourse on sustainable agriculture held

A landmark conclave on 'Sustainable Agro-Based Livelihood, Resource Management, and Environment Conservation' was held on Friday at Oasis College Auditorium, Kangpokpi, jointly organised by the Research and Development Cell of Oasis College, and Ka Inn Neocha (KIN) Farm, Bongmol.
The event brought together experts, policymakers, practitioners, and community leaders to chart an eco-friendly, resilient future for Sadar Hills.
Dr Thathang Vaiphei, chairman of Oasis College, opened the conclave, stressing the need for sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.
Ambassador Gautam Mukhopadhaya (IFS Retd) introduced the day's objectives.
Keynote speaker T Vijaykumar (IAS retd), executive vice chairman of Andhra Pradesh Ryuthu Sadikara Samstha, delivered an online address on natural farming.
Other sessions featured David Gandhi (SALT), Gratia Dkhar and Bah Phrang Roy (NESFAS) on indigenous food systems, and Michael Suantak (ASORCOM) on IT in agricultural value chains.
The afternoon session featured a brainstorming discussion with selected invitees, who shared grassroots experiences and practical strategies.
Notable speakers included Hejang Misao (InSIDE NE), Sem Haokip (THRIVE), and ambassador Mukhopadhaya.
The session concluded with a group discussion on actionable next steps, moderated by Dr Thathang Vaiphei.
The conclave culminated in the Kangpokpi Declaration, launching a district-wide Green Movement to combat deforestation, destructive mining, chemical farming, and poppy cultivation.
A core team has been constituted to spearhead the movement, with M Gautam appointed as convenor.
The team comprises Dr Kirnnei-jou, Chichin Haokip, Neinu Kipgen, Dr Lamtinthang, Hejang Misao, along with other community leaders.
They are tasked with drafting policy frameworks, a memorandum of association, and operational guidelines by July 30, 2025.Further boosting the initiative, over 30 dedicated individuals from diverse backgrounds were inducted as official members of the Green Movement.
Dr Ruth Nengeneilhing, principal in-charge of Oasis College, delivered the vote of thanks, commending the collective commitment to sustainability.
The movement marks a historic step for Sadar Hills, setting a precedent for community-led environmental action across Manipur and beyond.
