Imphal, July 01 2025:
Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) has submitted a memorandum to the Governor, urging immediate intervention for the repairing of several dilapidated roads and non-functional street lamps in Uripok area.
In the memorandum, UAL highlighted the miserable condition of major thoroughfares including Uripok Sorbon Thingel Road, Uripok-Naoremthong Laishram Leirak, Uripok Khwairak Selungba Road and Uripok Bachaspati Maning Leikai Road.
The UAL mentioned that these roads are riddled with potholes and broken surfaces, causing severe inconvenience to the public, particularly during the rainy season when potholes are filled with water, and during dry days when dust pollution becomes unbearable for commuters and residents.
Despite being one of the city's most important stretches, Uripok Sorbon Thingel Road connecting Uripok Kangchup Road to RIMS Road, remains neglected for years.
Similarly, the Naoremthong Laishram Leirak road, which leads to several key government offices including the Imphal West DC office, family court, Manipur Human Rights Commission and subordinate courts, is also in a bad shape despite its importance.
The memorandum urged authorities to restrict movement of heavy vehicles during peak hours, explaining that Uripok Khwairak Selungba Road, which leads to RIMS Hospital and the Medical Directorate office, is frequently used by heavy vehicles, causing traffic congestion and blocking emergency services.
The memorandum also pointed out that Uripok Bachaspati Maning Leikai Road, where Ramkrishna Mission School is located, faces similar conditions and affects both students and residents.
Apart from the deplorable roads, UAL expressed concern over the lack of functional street lamps on RIMS Road and Khwairak Selungba Road, which pose safety risks at night.
Repeated appeals to authorities concerned have gone unanswered, it rued.
UAL also annexed photographs as evidence in the memorandum which urged the Governor to personally intervene and direct the Public Works Department, Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited and the Manipur Housing and Urban Development to act urgently.
