Thoubal, May 17 2025:
World Hypertension Day 2025 was observed at YK College, Wangjing with a function and other events organised by the NCD Cell, District Health Society, Thoubal under the global theme, "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer".
The function was attended by Thoubal CMO Dr Y Nokul Singh and YK College principal professor Kh Jugindro Singh as chief guest and president respectively.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr M Bikramjit Singh, NP-NCD programme district nodal officer (DNO) underscored the significance of the occasion outlining various activities and initiatives scheduled throughout the district as part of a month-long campaign aimed at raising awareness on hypertension.
In his speech, Dr Y Nokul Singh described hypertension as a "silent killer" closely linked to dietary habits and stressed that excessive consumption of salt, spicy foods and other unhealthy items can lead to increased blood pressure.
"Individuals aged 30 years and above are strongly advised to undergo regular blood pressure check-ups at least once a year," he said, adding that early detection is key to both prevention and timely medical intervention.
Dr Nokul also encouraged the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, including quitting all forms of intoxicating substances, as a critical step in managing and preventing hypertension.
As part of the awareness programme, an open quiz competition was conducted, in which Takhellambam Malesh-wori Chanu (BSc VI Semester) secured the first position.
Hijam Dayananda Singh and Lingjelthoibi Naorem, both also from BSc VI Semester, won second and third places respectively.
Cash prizes were awarded to the winners.
Later, a walkathon was organised from YK College to the nearby bazaar areas to spread awareness about hypertension among the general public.
Around 200 participants, including students, teachers and healthcare staff took part in the event.
