Imphal, June 06 2025:
The residents of Ahallup Makha Leikai, which is one of the worst floods affected localities after the Imphal River breached its banks on May 31, continue to wait for the assistance from the government.
However, it is not known when the help would be provided.
While the river bank at Ahallup Makha Leikai has been repaired, many of the residents are unable to return to their homes which were inundated.
Although some have returned, others are still staying in relief camps as their houses are still filled with sludge and the walls swept away by the currents.
Those who have returned are busy trying to clear the mud and sludge.
There are also others who are not staying in the relief camps but spending the nights on the roads inside their vehicles.
The floods may have receded but the impact continues.
One Wahengbam Pakpi (65) of Kontha Ahallup Makha Leikai conveyed to this daily that she is a daily wager.
However, the flood has not only deprived her of work but also damaged her home, putting immense burden on her already difficult life.
Although she experienced the floods last year, this year's has been more difficult.
Taking a lesson from last year's floods, she tried to take out some household items or place them high above before the house got inundated.
However, the river bank first started leaking and then it breached suddenly, with the strong current sweeping the locality.
She did get the chance to take out any stuff or place them at elevated position.
As such, she lost years of her hard work and savings in an instant.
As the river breached, she sought shelter atop a neighbour's building.
She, along with others, were later rescued by AT members.
Now, she is left wondering when she would be able to rebuild her life again or even a place to call home.
