Senapati, June 04 2025:
Sensing the urgent need to find an alternate route to transport essential items into the State in the wake of the massive landslide along NH-2 near Phesama, Nagaland, Mao AC MLA Losii Dikho today conducted a survey along the NH-2 from Mao to Chakhabama via Kedima route bordering Nagaland.
After the survey, the MLA called for immediate restoration of the route to facilitate uninterrupted flow of passenger vehicles and six-wheeler heavy vehicles ferrying goods to Manipur amid raising concerns about availability of essential commodities and fuel in the market.
He pointed out that the surveyed route is an alternate lifeline for Manipur until a bypass route is constructed at Phesama landslide site.
Other highways like Imphal-Jiribam Highway (NH-37) and Maram-Peren Road (NH-129/A) are also facing frequent landslides and the distance is greater compared to the Mao-Chakhabama route, he said.
He also informed that the stretch from Mao (NH-2, Martyr's Park) to Kedima (Nagaland) is only 8 kms and the distance from Mao to Chakhabama, before reaching Kohima, is 26 kms.
However, he noted that since the alternate route within Manipur has not been properly maintained for a long time, its condition has worsened over the years.
Meanwhile the stretch within Nagaland has been broadened and is in a better state.
On a positive note, the MLA shared that despite the narrowness of the route in Manipur areas, six wheelers and other heavy vehicles will be able to ply along the stretch until the NH-2 is restored.
Meanwhile, trucks and heavy vehicles heading for Manipur have been stranded since June 1 near Kohima main town and drivers are facing difficulties due to lack of basic amenities.
It may be noted that incessant monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in the North East region, with Manipur being amongst the worst hit.
On top of widespread flooding, the State's main lifeline has been cut off at Phesama near Heritage Village, Nagaland since June 2.Till date, the bypass route has not been completed due to inclement weather even though small and light vehicles are allowed along narrow routes.
According to sources, the completion of the bypass route by the NHIDCL is likely to take time.
