COCOMI apprises UN body on Manipur conflict

Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) media coordinator Somorendro Thokchom and Legal Cell coordinator L Jadumani have informed that the Committee has apprised Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Delhi on exact details of the prevailing conflict in Manipur.
Addressing a press meet at COCOMI's office in Lamphelpat, here, on Friday, Somorendro said that ONCHR Asia Pacific Section chief Rory Mungoven was informed about the Kukis' place in the history of Manipur on September 20, along with how the conflict broke out in the first place.
COCOMI also stated how people are forced to become refugees in their own land, and urged the UN body to take up steps to check the illegal influx of Chin-Kukis through the Indo-Myanmar border and appealed to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to drive out narco-terrorists from Manipur.
The consultation, which was led by ONCHR Asia Pacific Section chief Rory Mungoven, was attended by representatives of Kuki and Meetei communities from different professions.
The office was also informed of the changes and impacts on the demography of Manipur due to increase of immigrants' influx into Manipur since 1881, compared to the population of the indigenous, in addition to the Kukis' plan to form a Kuki country, Zalengam'.
The Kukis' act of distorting historical facts, the spread of Myanmar-based Chin-Kuki settlements in Manipur, agreements between Kuki armed groups and the Government of India, setting up of narco-economy through poppy plantations, domination of Kukis in electoral politics in the hill areas and the demand for separate administration were also presented during the meeting, he conveyed.
