Imphal, April 20 2024:
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee has warned that it will launch steering off agitation and NH 2 bandh as being presently done along the NH 37 if the government does not heed to the demand of agitating drivers.
In a release, AITUC, Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar Singh conveyed that driver community has been delivering essential commodities to the state despite various risks and hazards that plagued NH 2 and 37.AITUC and driver unions/associations along with CSOs have been repeatedly pressing for establishment of Highway Protection Force to the central and state governments, but instead of heeding the demand they are taking up stopgap measures such as providing security cover or ROP, it Observed.
Claiming that the government has remained silent over the recent attack on drivers in Kaimai area along NH 37, AITUC asserted that it is due to government's indifference that has led to drivers to launch agitation.
The Union decried that despite this the government has not taken up any concrete action.
If the government continues to overlook their demands, it will resort to launching more stringent protest including steering off and blocking the NH 2 with support from driver unions and CSOs, it further cautioned, while adding that the government will be solely responsible for any unwanted incident arising due to the protest.
