Drive against plastics, awareness on SUPs conducted

Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) in collaboration with Bishnupur Municipal Council (BMC) carried out a special drive at Bishnupur Bazar on Thursday to enforce ban on plastic products below 120 micron thickness.
The joint team also confiscated plastic carry bags below 120 micron.
Speaking to media persons, BMC chief executive officer Thoudam Soni Singh reminded all concerned that the government has already banned single use plastics including carry bags below 120 micron thickness, non-woven plastic carry bags below 60 micron, earbuds with plastic sticks, balloon plastic sticks, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene for decorations, plastic plate & cups, forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing film used in sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets below 100 micron thickness.
He also cautioned that if any shop or vendor is found using banned plastic items then punitive measures would be initiated as per the law.
Meanwhile, Nambol L Sanoi College Department of Environmental Cell, IQAC and NSS Unit organised a one day awareness programme on 'Ban on Single Use Plastic (SUP) Items and Encouragement to use Compostable/Biodegradable Items and Other Alternative to SUPs' at the conference hall of the College on Thursday.
The programme was participated by Department of Geography assistant professor Dr RK Haripriya Devi, associate professor S Trilokchandra, assistant professor L Ibochoubi Singh and IQAC co-ordinator A Tejmani Singh.
The faculty members and students also took out an awareness rally as a part of the programme.
