Khongjom Day on Apr 25, not 23rd: Committee

Imphal, April 22 2025: Maintaining that the state government had mistakenly started observance of Khongjom Day on April 23 instead of April 25, the day the battle was fought, Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee, Manipur has decided to urge Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to correct the observance date.

Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Tuesday, Committee assistant secretary Chongtham Tomba noted that Khongjom Day is being observed on April 23 since 1975 to honour those who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Khongjom for the sake of their motherland.

However, the appropriateness of this date has remained a contentious topic.

Many people continue to question the validity of observing the day on April 23."Although correction may be delayed, it is important to ensure historical accuracy for future generations," he said.

The secretary further noted that there are no written records or documents confirming that the final day of the Khongjom Battle was fought on April 23.The only available records are found in the Cheitharol Kumbaba and British archives.

It is important to interpret these sources accurately.

According to British records and a book authored by a Gorkha sepoy who was part of the battle, it is clearly mentioned that the Khongjom Battle took place on April 25, not April 23 .

"Thus, a memorandum will be submitted to the Governor, urging the official observance of Khongjom Day on April 25," Tomba added.
