Flash floods wreak havoc in Noney district

Noney, July 16 2025:
Torrential rainfall that lashed Noney district since Tuesday night seriously affected normal life as flash floods inundated vast tract of wet paddy fields in Khoupum Valley and caused damage to houses nearby the Khoupum dam while some pets and cattle perished due to impact of the natural calamity.
To assess the ground situation, Nungba MLA and Hill Areas Committee chairman Dinganglung Gangmei rushed to Khoupum Valley and met some flood-affected families.
The downpour also triggered landslides at various locations in the district and uprooted electric poles, snapping power supply.

Movement of vehicles and people has also been disrupted due to damage of inter village roads and handful of bridges and culverts swept away by swift current to flood waters.
The flash floods and overflowing of the Leimatak river also inundated over 30 hectares of paddy fields in low lying area around Longsai village and Longrang Part -2 .
Some cattle were swept away by the current of the river.
Meanwhile, the flash flood-hit farmers appealed to the government authorities to extend help and provide relief materials.
The natural calamity after disrupted traffic flow along the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road) with massive landslides and mudslides in between Luangchum and Rangkhung villages under Noney district severing communication.
ABCI Company, which is overseeing construction of road along the highway stretch has started clearing the landslide debris using excavator and dumper trucks.
According to PRO of ABCI Company, the salvage operation might have to be extended till Thursday.
Many vehicles are reportedly stranded on both sides of the affected locations.
Meanwhile, Longsai Village Authority has fervently appealed to the government to provide relief to those affected by the torrential rains and flash floods.
In a release, Longsai village chief Kabidon Gonmei said that overflowing of the Leimatak River has caused irreparable damage to around 37 hectares of wet paddy fields located on the banks of the river.
He also urged authorities concerned to provide relief for 37 families affected by the natural calamity.
