Imphal, June 16 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a prolonged spell of moderate to very heavy rainfall across the Northeast for the next seven days, issuing multiple orange alerts and flash flood warnings with special concern for Manipur and its neighbouring states.
According to the weather bulletin issued Monday, an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over northeast Assam and the surrounding region, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
This weather system is likely to trigger widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy showers across the region.
In a special flash flood risk outlook valid till 5.30 pm of Monday, IMD has identified a low to moderate flash flood risk over several districts in Manipur, including Bishnu pur, Chandel, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Senapati, Tamenglong, Thoubal and Ukhrul.
The warning also covers large parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura.
The risk is attributed to the combination of fully saturated soil and expected high surface runoff from continuous rainfall.
Surface runoff and inundation are likely to affect low-lying areas and watersheds in these regions.
IMD has urged residents to remain alert, monitor updates, and exercise caution while travelling or Working in vulnerable locations.
For Tuesday, IMD placed the entire Northeast under an orange alert, with exception of Assam.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura, as well as Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of central and coastal India.
